Florida Solar Incentives (Rebates, Tax Credits & More in 2023)

In this guide to Florida’s best solar companies, you’ll learn:
It only makes sense that more and more homeowners in the Sunshine State are going solar. Residential solar system installations have been steadily on the rise in Florida since 2015.1
Many Florida homeowners looking for solar panel installations choose their company based on who offers the cheapest solar panels. While saving money is a great feeling, there are plenty of other factors — like warranty or energy storage options — you should consider when choosing a solar installer in the winter months.
There are hundreds of solar installers trying to capitalize on the hot solar power market in Florida, so it can be hard to know which company is going to be the most high-quality. The EcoWatch Reviews Team has done the hard research for you and narrowed down these nine as the best solar companies in Florida:
Read on to learn more about why we trust each company below to help you lower your electric bills by switching to renewable energy. We’ve included information we felt would be most useful for Florida homeowners to know so that you can make the best purchasing decision for you and your family.

SunPower delivers the most efficient residential solar panels, manufactured by Maxeon, on the market. With high-efficiency panels, you’re able to get more solar energy production with fewer panels. With Florida’s abundance of sunshine, choosing SunPower is a great way for you to save on solar panels because you can install a smaller system that’s still strong enough to power your home.
Because SunPower only offers its own equipment, the downside to choosing this installer is that there’s not much room for customization. For example, if you’re keen on having the Tesla Powerwall as your solar battery, you can’t install SunPower Panels. Instead, you must install SunPower’s SunVault.
Fortunately SunPower offers top-of-the-line equipment, so it’s not a huge sacrifice. Plus, instead of having various manufacturer warranties to keep track of, every element of your SunPower solar system — panels, inverters, batteries and installation — will be protected under the company’s industry-leading 25-year warranty.
SunPower’s first-class solar energy system is, predictably, one of the more expensive options on the market. But the company is aware of the high costs involved with solar panel installation and offers several solar financing options, including an in-house zero-down loan with SunPower Financial, leases and power purchase agreements (referred to as PPAs).
Speaking of finances, SunPower’s superior technology starts right off the bat with online estimates and virtual consultations, so you’re aware of all costs involved and won’t ever be hit with hidden fees.
SunPower’s customers rave about the company’s customer service and expertise in helping people go solar in Florida. However, because SunPower is a national provider, it does outsource its work to local providers, which has led to complaints of spotty customer service in some locations.

ADT Solar, formerly Sunpro, is a well-known solar installer providing solar panels, solar backup battery installation and online monitoring to customers across 21 states and counting.
What we love about ADT Solar is that it handles the entire installation process, start to finish, with no subcontractors. It also offers its customers numerous benefits including several solar panel brands (and energy efficiency ranges), competitive pricing and free solar consultations.
But the real brag-worthy aspect of ADT is its comprehensive 25-year warranty. Unlike most companies, which only offer product warranties and 10-year workmanship warranties, ADT guarantees your solar system will produce at its estimated level for decades after your purchase. According to ADT, if your system does not produce the amount of energy guaranteed, you will receive the difference in cash — that’s a strong promise.
While Sunpro was founded in 2008, the company has only been operating in Florida since 2018. There’s no doubting ADT’s clear track record for success as it’s quickly expanding. But with less than five years in Florida, ADT contractors may not be as knowledgeable with local solar policy and incentives the way a longtime Florida solar installer may be.
With that said, we recommend getting a free quote from ADT Solar and asking contractors about their experience working with solar in The Sunshine State. There’s a good chance you’ll speak with installers who have been working in the solar industry long before ADT started its Florida operation.

The first installer on our list that operates solely within Florida, Solar Source is a favorite solar company among local roofers, builders and homeowners. That’s likely because Solar Source is just that — a source for all things solar. Aside from solar panel systems, Solar Source also offers Tesla Solar Roofs, solar pool heating and solar hot water systems.
Solar Source has served more than 60,000 solar customers in Central Florida since its inception in 1984. Unfortunately, Solar Source only services homeowners in the Greater Tampa and Greater Orlando areas, which leaves many Florida homeowners to search for solar installation elsewhere.
A commitment to top-quality solar products, exceptional service and reliable support has earned the company many positive reviews from customers. Solar Source has accreditation from some of the top solar organizations, including the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and the Florida Solar Energy Industries Association (FlaSEIA). On its website, Solar Source boasts that it is “trusted” by national organizations like NASA and the YMCA and has solar projects across North America.
Florida is frequently hit by tropical storms and severe weather, and Solar Source offers nearly four decades of expertise you can trust to install your system securely. This company designs its systems with Florida weather in mind, installing all systems directly to trusses that have proven to stay intact for homeowners, even when hurricane winds tore roof shingles off around their panels.
In our opinion, Solar Source’s biggest disadvantage is its warranty coverage. The company says your photovoltaic (PV) system will be protected by the manufacturer’s 25-year warranty that includes panel performance. However, as a company, Solar Source only covers parts, panels and labor for one year after installation, which is a very short time compared to competitors. We’d like to see at least five years for a workmanship warranty.

This family business was founded in St. Petersburg in 2015 and has quickly grown to serve the entire State of Florida, as well as South Carolina and Texas. Solar Bear evolved from providing home energy audits and monitoring to renewable energy services.
Alongside solar PV and storage, Solar Bear installs solar thermal and geothermal heat pumps in Florida. As a bonus, Solar Bear offers roofing and spray foam insulation services, which is beneficial because some homeowners find they’ll have to replace their roofs to add solar panels and having one contractor to perform both services can often save money.
Solar Bear offers a variety of brands including SolarEdge, Trina Solar, Panasonic and Silfab. Solar Bear has impressive ratings from its customers, holding more than 4.5 stars across various solar review websites, so customers can trust Solar Bear’s transparency in its business practices.
There are no solar lease or PPA options with Solar Bear, but loan financing options are offered through partnerships with EnerBank and Sunlight Financial. While Solar Bear doesn’t have many years of experience under its belt, it has hundreds of positive customer reviews that speak to its honesty and professionalism.
For customers looking to support local, family-owned businesses without sacrificing quality, Solar Bear may be the option for you.

Blue Raven Solar is a popular solar provider serving 17 states, including some parts of Florida. Its promising growth is the reason it was recently purchased by industry titan SunPower.
While it shines in a lot of areas, Blue Raven Solar’s biggest advantage is its innovative financing plans: BluePower Plus+ and SmartStart. Unlike most other solar panel loans, BluePower Plus+ offers the unique advantages of a $0-upfront option for the first 18 months of a system’s life as well as a fixed repayment rate and the ability to pay the loan off at any time without penalty. Its exclusive SmartStart program extends that low, 18-month promotional monthly payment by up to 42 months.
Blue Raven does not offer solar leases or PPAs, but its unique financing plans make solar ownership much more accessible to more homeowners while still extending a low solar panel payback period.
At the moment, Blue Raven’s biggest disadvantage is that it only offers services in Orlando, Tallahassee and their surrounding areas, which means it’s not an option for all Floridians.
Blue Raven also doesn’t offer solar batteries for energy storage, which is basically a necessity for Florida homeowners that experience frequent storms. However, Blue Raven has promised that solar storage options would be coming soon. With its recent acquisition by SunPower, we’re guessing it will soon offer SunPower’s storage device, the SunVault.
All of Blue Raven’s panels are protected by a strong 25-year warranty plus a 10-year warranty for workmanship.

If you’re looking for the most affordable solar panel company in Florida, Solar-Ray may be your best bet. The company was founded on the principle of offering the best service, price and products available. Solar-Ray also offers all customers a 5% cash rebate on their purchases.
Solar Ray has a great reputation in the Orlando area with a team of NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioner)-certified technicians. A preferred solar service provider of Duke Energy, Orange County Public Schools, Orlando Utility Commission and the University of Central Florida, Solar-Ray has 14 years of local knowledge and experience to ensure Floridians secure the maximum value from their solar investment.
Solar-Ray provides solar panel design, installation and monitoring services for both residential and commercial properties. Unfortunately they only install panels at this time, so if you have other solar energy needs, like batteries or EV chargers, you’ll have to hire another company for that. Solar-Ray offers cash or solar loans but no solar lease or PPAs.
There’s not much information readily available regarding Solar-Ray’s warranty coverage, but we know they have 25-year warranties on all equipment and warranty on any roof leaks or issues from installation. Solar-Ray has a 100% satisfaction guarantee and many customer reviews mention that Solar-Ray’s warranty was the best they were offered.

Momentum Solar prides itself on solar education, making the process of switching to solar energy as simple as possible. While headquartered in New Jersey, Momentum Solar has been serving homeowners in Florida since its Orlando office opened in 2017. It also serves eight other states.
Despite the company’s size, Momentum Solar is known for being affordable. It also accepts all forms of solar financing, including solar panel leases and PPAs, making it an optimal choice for homeowners who want to give solar a try.
Thousands of customer reviews online boast about Momentum’s affordability and outstanding customer service. It’s likely because Momentum uses a concierge service for all customers, so you’ll have a direct point of contact throughout your time with them.
Momentum Solar turns every solar installation into an experience, walking consumers through every step of the process. The company has a mobile app that allows customers to monitor their solar installation process and system. Momentum also has an online blog to keep customers informed, making the company a great choice for customers who want to stay engaged throughout their solar system installation.
Momentum offers solar panels and solar storage, and all of its equipment is protected by either 25 or 30 year manufacturer warranties. Its workmanship warranty could be stronger, as it is only valid for 10 years, but at least it’s offered.
We feel it’s important to share that Momentum Solar is currently facing a proposed class action lawsuit that accuses the company and its management of racial discrimination. As of October 2022, no verdict has been reached. EcoWatch has not independently verified the claims mentioned in this lawsuit but you can find out more information here.

While the installation cost of solar in Florida has dropped significantly, it’s not cheap by any means. The average Floridian will typically face a $29,000 bill for their home solar system before factoring in any solar financial incentives, tax credits or rebates.
The cost of solar per watt ($2.53) in Florida is cheaper than the national average ($2.66), but homeowners in Florida typically need bigger solar systems than the average American does because they consume more energy on average. (It’s likely from cranking that air conditioning all summer!)
The average Floridian installs a 11.5 kilowatt-hour (kWh) system to offset their energy needs compared to the average American who only needs a 9 kW solar panel system. For consistency, the table below reflects average prices for an 11.5 kW system in Florida vs. the average American price tag.
Florida | United States | |
Average Per Watt Electricity Cost | $2.53 | $2.66 |
Average Cost for an 11.5 kW System | $29,095 | $30,590 |
Average System Cost After Federal Tax Credit | $20,367 | $21,413 |
We know these are large numbers, but don’t get scared off. Remember that your solar investment will help you save tremendously on (or even eliminate) your electric bills. Estimated energy savings in Florida range from 80% to 109% according to SunPower, which means you could pay next to nothing to keep your home cool all summer long.2
Plus, there are plenty of ways you can save money on solar panels in Florida:
Every homeowner that installs solar panels in the U.S. is entitled to the federal solar tax credit (ITC), worth 30% of your total system cost. In Florida, that brings your $29,095 system closer to $20,300 — a savings of over $9,000!
Below is a quick overview of some of the Florida solar financial incentives:
Florida Solar Incentive | Program Overview |
Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) | The federal solar ITC is a tax credit that homeowners can claim on their federal tax returns. The credit is worth 30% of the total cost of solar panel systems that are purchased through 2032. The credit will drop to 26% in 2033 and 22% in 2034 and be phased out by 2035 unless renewed by Congress. |
Florida Net Metering Programs | Net energy metering (NEM) programs give credits to homeowners when their solar panels produce extra electricity and it is exported to the local power grid |
Florida Tax Exemptions | Florida property tax exemptions and sales tax exemptions for solar and other renewable energy equipment |
Local Incentives | Incentives, rebates and low-interest financing programs at the town, city, and county level that encourage local solar installations |
If any of the above solar providers are of interest to you, make sure you click the dropdown to learn more cost information about each solar company.
If you’re looking for the cheapest solar panels, pay attention to the dollar signs we’ve assigned each company. The good news is that Florida sunshine is abundant, so even lower-quality solar panels will still perform well in The Sunshine State.
On the other hand, choosing higher quality panels may save you money by allowing you to install a smaller solar system. For example, SunPower solar panels are more expensive upfront, but they’re the most efficient solar panels on the market, which means you can buy fewer panels and still generate enough electricity to power your home.
If two or more solar companies on this list look good to you, it’s not a dilemma. In fact, we recommend reaching out to at least three solar companies.
Solar companies don’t advertise exact prices because every home is different. But nearly all of them will give you a free, no-obligation quote after assessing your household needs. Plus, if you get a lower quote from one company but prefer another, you might be able to get them to match the lower quote.
Most people don’t have $29,000 laying around, but the more money you can pay up front in cash, the cheaper your solar system is going to be.
Cash purchases save you the most money over time because they don’t require you to pay interest. On the other hand, solar loans may make your equipment more affordable in the short term, but you’ll pay more for your system in the end because of all the added interest you’ll pay over time.
If you do have to take out a solar loan, shop around before you sign any papers. We also recommend calling some local banks to see if they offer low-interest rate home improvement loans for solar systems.
Once you get into contact with a solar company, ask them about any discounts they’re offering that you may be eligible for. Just like retailers, solar installers sometimes offer seasonal deals as well as discounts for veterans, seniors, etc. You can save a lot on your solar panel installation by taking advantage of discounts.
Know anyone else in your neighborhood who wants to go solar? Many solar companies offer cash for referrals. For example, SunVena offers $500 for two customer referrals, and major perks — like six months of free solar — for three or more referrals.
Solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) are a type of solar lease agreement. The difference between a PPA and a solar lease is that, with a PPA, your payments purchase the power that the panels create each month, rather than paying a flat monthly price to lease the solar equipment.
Unfortunately Florida is one of four states that doesn’t allow solar PPAs. That’s because Florida law states that anyone that sells electricity to end-users (customers like you) is a “public utility,” and therefore must follow a set of state laws for public utilities.3
The law’s wording only allows the property owner to build and sell electricity to users, which means that your solar company would not be allowed to sell you your solar electricity while the panels are located on your roof.4
Multiple studies have shown that solar panels do increase the value of a home, including a 2022 EcoWatch survey in which 63% of respondents said they would pay more for a home with solar panels than a home without.
Research from Zillow shows that, on average, homes with solar panels typically sell for 4% more compared to homes without. However, that amount was even higher in Florida, with homes in Orlando selling for 4.6% more, according to the study.5
The average Florida home sold for roughly $315,000 in 2022. Adding solar panels would increase this home value by about $12,600.
If you consider yourself a YouTuber extraordinaire, you might be wondering if you could watch some videos and complete a DIY solar panel installation to save yourself some money on labor costs.
Be aware that installing solar panels is a much trickier home improvement task than fixing a leaky sink or replacing a roof shingle. It involves electrical work, permitting, grid interconnection and many other tasks you may not be up for.
Let’s take a look at some advantages and disadvantages of DIY solar panel installation.
You Can Save Money
To state the obvious, when you hire a solar contractor, you’re paying them for their time and services, like solar panel design and installation labor. You can save some money by eliminating these two expenses and doing it yourself.
You Can Start Small
Want to try out solar without installing an entire solar panel system? A DIY solar panel kit is a great way to “test drive” the solar lifestyle.
Winter Weather Isn’t an Issue
Aside from hurricane season, Florida weather stays pretty mild, which means you won’t have to navigate weather challenges if you’re trying to install solar panels during the fall or winter.
Disadvantages of DIY Solar Installation in Florida
You Face Safety and Structural Risks
If you’re not confident in what you’re doing, the dollars you’ll save by installing your own solar panels will just turn into more money spent on repairing or replacing equipment, and potentially your roof as well. Worst case scenario: you’re also facing medical bills for treating injuries you incurred climbing up on a roof with heavy solar equipment.
You Won’t Have Strong Warranty Coverage
Solar panels are typically covered under 25-year manufacturer warranties, and inverters and batteries will have warranties ranging from 10 to 25 years as well. However, many of these manufacturers only honor those warranties under the condition the equipment was installed by a professional, licensed contractor. Therefore you may not have warranty protection with a DIY solar system setup.
You Have to Take Care of Permitting, Inspections and Interconnection
Depending on where you live, you may need to be a certified electrician to install your solar panel system. Even if that’s not the case, you’ll still need permits and to figure out grid interconnection, which requires specialized knowledge and expertise in the State of Florida.
The smallest things can go wrong and lead to rejection of permits by your local government, or worse, a major electrical mishap. Plus, professional solar installers have years of experience with solar energy in Florida, so they’ll be able to get you set up with better incentives or solar equipment rebates that you may not know about if you’re going solar on your own.
Bottom line: If you’re considering a DIY solar installation, we still recommend talking with a few certified solar installers first. They’ll survey your house to make sure you’re even a good candidate for solar panels, and most solar installation companies offer consultations for free. That way, even if you do decide to take on solar panel installation on your own, you’ll have more insight on what the process of going solar looks like.
If you want to go solar in Florida, picking the best solar installer for your needs is a top priority. These are the most important solar company qualities for Florida homeowners specifically:
After shelling out thousands of dollars, you want to protect your solar investment as best you can — especially living in a state like Florida where you see quite a few severe storms.
Unfortunately solar warranties don’t always cover weather-related damage (although your homeowner’s insurance should). But if your panels are underperforming or need repair, you can likely still have them fixed under your solar installer’s workmanship warranty.
Solar is getting more and more popular in Florida, which means there are too many fly-by-night solar companies trying to cash-grab, often burning their customers in the process.
Florida installers are competing against 200-some other companies. So if a company — especially a local Florida solar company — has been able to stay relevant and retain customers for 10-plus years, it says a lot about its customer care and satisfaction.
Solar companies often have shiny websites talking about how much they love and value their customers, but how much of it is true? Check third-party sites for customer reviews and make sure you read the good and the bad so you know what you’re getting yourself into.
However, it’s important to remember that not everyone is going to have the best experience, even when working with one of the best solar companies in Florida.
Money isn’t everything, but it’s definitely something. Floridians have higher energy needs compared to other Americans, so it’s important to choose a solar installer that’s going to offer you the best cost value for your system.
That said, the cheapest solar company isn’t always the best solar company, which is why solar financing options are crucial. If you had a great experience with a solar company but can’t afford to pay them $30,000 for their system this year, see if they’ll be willing to work on different financing options.
We like to see solar companies that are members of a national solar organization (like SEIA), boast NABCEP-certified technicians and have badges from top solar panel brands on their website. It’s a good sign of credibility and expertise.
We also recommend choosing installers that are affiliated with local organizations. For example, Solar-Ray scored well with EcoWatch Reviews because it’s a preferred solar service provider of Duke Energy, Orange County Public Schools, Orlando Utility Commission and University of Central Florida.
These nine solar companies are the best solar installers in Florida, but SunPower reigns supreme for our EcoWatch rankings.
SunPower has the most efficient panels, which allows Floridians to save money on solar installations because they can install smaller systems and still get maximum energy production. On top of that, every element of your system is protected under a 25-year warranty that protects equipment, power production and workmanship.
Although Florida doesn’t allow PPAs, SunPower offers all of the other available solar financing options — cash purchase, loans and leases — which makes going solar more accessible to more Floridians. As such, we think it’s the best solar company in Florida.
However, just because SunPower is the best solar installer in Florida doesn’t mean it’s the best solar company for your needs. That’s why we recommend you reach out to multiple installers and compare quotes and offerings.
When we rank our top solar companies, we start by identifying the factors that matter most when ensuring our readers find a trustworthy, reliable and environmentally responsible installation. We’ve listed those factors as categories below. We then weigh these factors against the industry benchmark (a company meeting the industry standard in all categories would earn 4 stars in our rating system). We also researched over 15 providers (national and local) and selected the top 7 based on a variety of superlatives we felt could help guide a user to their choice.
Our goal is to deliver unbiased reports and honest reviews, so our methodology is not affected by commercial partnerships and is specifically tailored to Florida homes.
Florida solar companies will earn a perfect score in this category if they offer in-house installations, energy storage systems (solar batteries) and home-efficiency audits or upgrades. A company can earn bonus points if it offers additional services that we don’t consider essential, including electric vehicle chargers, home thermostats, etc. The industry standard that we measure against includes solar panel and backup battery installations only.
A company earns a perfect score in this category if it is NABCEP-certified, has a minimum of four stars over its last 100 reviews on Google, is rated A+ with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has 4 or more stars on Glassdoor to reflect employee satisfaction and low turnover rate. We give bonus points for additional certifications, such as LEED or Building Performance Institute (BPI) certification or any from local Florida sources. On the other hand, we flag a company for further review if it has any track record of lawsuits or customer rights violations.
A company earns a perfect score in this category if it offers 25-year warranties that cover performance, product and workmanship. The industry standard that we measure companies against is 25-year product and performance warranties, along with a 10-year workmanship warranty. We also look closely into the track record of the post-installation support each company provides, specifically to Florida homeowners, in terms of honoring its warranties.
A company earns a perfect score in this category if it offers multiple financing options, including in-house options in addition to those with partner organizations like regional and local Florida banks. As many solar companies choose not to offer leases and PPAs in the interest of consumer well-being, we do not dock points for companies that don’t offer them, although we will mention it.
For this list, a company earns a perfect score in this category if it has 10-plus years of experience installing solar in the State of Florida. The industry standard that we measure against is at least five years of experience.
A company earns a perfect score in this category if it offers service to the entire state of Florida. The standard we rate against is servicing the majority of the state or at least two major metropolitan areas.
A company earns a perfect score in this category if it offers public data disclosure, addresses end-of-life (EoL) products or processes and demonstrates a commitment to uplifting the State of Florida or the local communities that it serves.
Read More About Going Solar in Florida
SunPower is technically the largest solar company in Florida because it’s a national provider, but it’s headquartered in California. Unicity Solar, serving four other states, is the largest Florida-headquartered solar company. Solar Bear and Solar-Ray are the only two companies that serve homeowners throughout Florida but no other state.
SunPower’s Maxeon solar panels are the best for Florida because their maximum efficiency ensures that Florida homeowners will be able to meet their above-average energy needs.
Floridians see better savings from going solar than most other other state residents, so it’s definitely worth it to go solar in The Sunshine State if you want to eliminate your high utility bills.
Momentum Solar has performed the most residential solar installations in Florida, followed by ADT Solar, Solar Source and Goldin Solar.
