Solar panels are now commonplace in the UK (photo: Adobe).

With energy costs rising all the time, an investment in solar panels will reduce your electricity bill and contribute to a greener planet. Installing solar panels is a large upfront outlay but, over their lifespan, you’ll be able to make that money back and then some, all while living more sustainably.

Choosing the best solar panels for home use is an important decision. It’s a large investment and also has an impact on the infrastructure of your house. What’s more, your solar panels will likely sit on your roof for up to 30 years.

Let’s take a look at some of the benefits and answer your questions about solar panels.

Solar panels frequently asked questions

How do solar panels work?

  1. Sunlight hits the solar cells
  2. Increased temperature causes electrons to move, creating a current
  3. Plates and wires in the panel turn the current into usable electricity

Do solar panels work in the UK?

Because the UK gets more than eight hours of daylight each day and has pretty mild temperatures year-round, it’s regarded as an ideal climate for solar power.

Can you sell solar power back to the National Grid?

Yes. Assuming your house is connected to the National Grid, you can sell any surplus electricity you generate back to your energy supplier.

How quickly will solar panels pay for themselves?

This depends on the system and number of panels you install. Here’s an example of an average install, with both 4kW and 5kW systems:

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Even on cloudy days, solar panels will generate electricity. Their output won’t be as high as it is on sunny days with little cloud cover, but the rule still applies: if you can see outside, there is enough light for solar panels to do their job.

Do solar panels work in shade?

Solar panels will still work in shade, but like the scenario above, their output will be reduced. How solar panels work best is when mounted in an open, south-facing location.

Can solar panels damage my roof?

If done properly by an MCS-certified roofer who knows how to install solar panels, there will be no damage to your roof. Tiles need to be briefly removed to fit the anchor brackets, but the tiles can be put back into place. Anchors are designed to sit comfortably between your roof tiles. They can also accommodate all the different types of roof tiles. Apart from some drill holes in your rafters, there are no invasive procedures involved in the installation process.

Can you install solar panels on your roof yourself?

It is possible to install solar panels on your roof yourself, but not recommended unless you have specialist skills that enable you to carry out the work safely.  You will need an electrician’s experience or knowledge of how home electrics work. You will also need roofing experience, not to mention all of the tools of each trade.
