For many people, the holidays are rich with time-honored traditions like decorating the Christmas tree, lighting the menorah, caroling, cookie baking, and sipping from the unity cup. But there's another unofficial, official holiday tradition that spans all ages and beliefs and gives people across the world hope for a better tomorrow: the New Year's resolution.
Benefits of Chamomile Tea<p><strong>Sleep More Soundly</strong></p><p>Pick your grandmother's brain about the best way to fall asleep, and she might tell you to down a nice glass of warm milk. But if you consult with science, research shows that chamomile might be a better option. That's because it contains an antioxidant called apigenin, which can <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2995283/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">promote sleepiness and reduce insomnia and other sleep problems</a>.</p><p>Two research studies even confirmed the power of chamomile throughout the day and before bed. In one of those studies, postpartum women who drank chamomile for two weeks <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26483209" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">experienced better sleep quality than the control group who didn't</a>. Another research effort measured how fast people could fall asleep. Those results illustrated that participants who consumed 270 milligrams of chamomile extract twice daily for 28 days <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3198755/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">fell asleep 15 minutes faster than the control</a>. The chamomile group also had considerably fewer sleep disruptions. </p><p><strong>May Be Able to Keep Your Gut Healthy</strong></p><p>Though the following studies used rats as the subjects, research shows that chamomile can potentially play a beneficial role in digestive health. According to that research, the anti-inflammatory properties in <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24463157" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">chamomile extract may be able to protect against diarrhea</a>. Additionally, chamomile may be an effective way to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4177631/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">stop the growth of bacteria in our stomachs that contribute to ulcers</a>.</p><p><strong>Reduces Stress and Anxiety</strong></p><p>Few things are more relaxing than curling up with a good cup of tea, so it's logical that chamomile tea can serve a stress reducer. While it lacks the potency of a pharmaceutical drug, long-term use of chamomile has been shown to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27912875" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">"significantly" reduce general anxiety disorders</a>. In general, chamomile can act almost like a sedative, and many people enjoy the tea because it puts them in a calm and relaxed state almost immediately. </p><p><strong>Boosts Immune Health</strong></p><p>Vitamin C and zinc are common over-the-counter supplements that people often turn to when they're hoping to avoid becoming sick. While scientists admit that more research must take place to prove chamomile's impact on preventing ailments like the common cold, the existing studies do show promise in this area. </p><p>One study had 14 participants drink five cups of the tea every day for two consecutive weeks. Throughout the study, researchers collected daily urine samples and tested the contents before and after the consumption of the tea. Drinking chamomile resulted in a significant increase in the levels of hippurate and glycine, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2995283/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">both of which are known to increase antibacterial activity</a>. Inhaling steam from a pot of freshly brewed chamomile tea may also ease the symptoms of nasal congestion.</p><p><strong>Minimizes Menstrual Cramps</strong></p><p>This one may come as a surprise, particularly to readers who have tried every possible over-the-counter treatment to reduce period pain. Several research studies have proven that chamomile tea may be able to minimize the pain and cramps that occur during menstruation. Women in that same study also dealt with lower levels of anxiety that they typically felt because of menstrual cramps.</p><p><strong>Help Diabetes and Lower Blood Sugar</strong></p><p>For people with diabetes, regulating blood sugar levels can be a matter of life or death. And while chamomile will never replace prescription-strength drugs, it's believed that it can prevent an increase in blood sugar. A 2008 study on rats showed that chamomile could have a <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/jf8014365" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">moderate impact on the long-term risk of diabetes</a>.</p><p><strong>Might Improve Your Skin</strong></p><p>Ever wondered why there's been an influx of chamomile-infused cosmetic products? The reason why so many manufacturers now include chamomile in their lotions, soaps, and creams is because it <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5074766/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">acts as an anti-inflammatory on our skin</a>. That means it may be able to soothe the puffiness that plagues us as we age. Those same anti-inflammatory properties can be vital in restoring skin health after we've received a sunburn. </p><p>Before discarding your used chamomile tea bags, try chilling them and placing them over your eyes. Not only will this help with the puffiness, but it can drastically light the skin color around the eye.</p><p><strong>Help With Heart Health</strong></p><p>Some of the most beneficial antioxidants we put into our bodies are what are known as flavones, and chamomile tea is chock full of them. Flavones have the potential to lower both blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which, when elevated, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4814348/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">can lead to heart disease</a>.</p>

According to a 2017 report published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, you shouldn't drink more 300-400 mg of caffeine a day. In other words, roughly 2-4 cups of coffee.
With that said, everyone responds to caffeine differently. For some, a daily caffeine intake of 200 mg could be excessive—it all depends on your unique body chemistry. But how can you tell how much caffeine is too much?
Finding Your Ideal Caffeine Dose<p>Regardless of age, weight, and caffeine source, some people are just more sensitive to caffeine than others. In fact, a sip or two of coffee can make some people jittery, anxious, and dizzy. Recommended doses are just rough guidelines at best, but they by no means apply to everyone. To find your ideal caffeine dose, you'll have to experiment with different caffeine sources and gradually increase your dose until you achieve the desired effects.</p>
Drink Slowly<p>With stimulants like caffeine, timing is everything. In other words, having one cup of coffee every four hours is much different than one cup of coffee every 45 minutes. Caffeine stays in your system for 4-6 hours, so consuming multiple drinks within this timeframe can have compounding effects.</p>
Consider Your Body Weight<p>Some studies recommend that you don't drink more than 6 mg per kg of bodyweight. According to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12519715" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">one recent study</a>, "[This amount] is not associated with negative effects of caffeine such as general toxicity, cardiovascular effects, effects on bone status and calcium balance (with consumption of adequate calcium), changes in adult behaviour, increased incidence of cancer and effects on male fertility."</p>
Consider the Time of Day<p>Given that caffeine can remain in your system for four to six hours, it's important not to drink it too late in the day. In fact, drinking just one cup of coffee or tea too close to bedtime may make it hard to sleep. </p><p>A 2013 study published in <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3805807/" target="_blank"><em>The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine</em></a> found that, "Caffeine taken 6 hours before bedtime has important disruptive effects on sleep and provides empirical support for sleep hygiene recommendations to refrain from substantial caffeine use for a minimum of 6 hours prior to bedtime."</p>
Take Caffeine with Energizing Foods<p>In order to help minimize the risk of caffeine overdose and maximize productivity, it's best to rely on healthy foods as your primary energy source. Caffeine can be great for a quick pick-me up, but nutritional foods should serve as your foundation.</p><p>For example, wild-caught salmon and sardines are packed with energizing omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats provide slow-burning energy, fight inflammation, and boost cognitive performance. A 2014 study published in the journal <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24470182" target="_blank"><em>Human Psychopharmacology</em></a> found that omega-3s can boost brain performance in young adults. At the same time, a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26890759" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2016 study</a> found that omega-3 supplementation can improve memory in older adults.</p><p>Other foods that may boost productivity include:</p><ul><li>Broccoli</li><li>Beets </li><li>Eggs</li><li>Almonds</li><li>Dark chocolate</li></ul><p>Dark chocolate is caffeinated, but it's also an incredible source of magnesium, a mineral that <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20152124" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">studies show</a> can enhance learning and memory while reducing anxiety. Plus, chocolate contains minimal caffeine and is unlikely to contribute to caffeine overdose. </p>
Final Thoughts<p>Follow these guidelines for drinking caffeine:</p><ul><li>Drink at most 2-4 cups of coffee daily. </li><li>If you feel like you still need more caffeine, drink tea instead. </li><li>Stop drinking caffeine within six hours before bedtime. </li><li>Don't drink more than two caffeinated beverages within a 4-6 hour period. </li><li>Use healthy food as your primary energy source and caffeine as an extra pick-me-up.</li></ul><p>Excessive caffeine drinking can trigger undesirable side effects, including anxiety and confusion. What is Yerba Mate?
Yerba mate is a tea made from the leaves and twigs of the Ilex paraguariensis plant.
The leaves are typically dried over fire, then steeped in hot water to make the tea.
Yerba mate is traditionally consumed from a container called a "gourd" and sipped with a metal straw that has a filter at its lower end to strain out the leaf fragments.
Sharing it from this traditional gourd is said to be a sign of friendship and bonding.

1. Rich in Antioxidants and Nutrients
Yerba mate contains several beneficial plant nutrients, including (1):
- Xanthines: These compounds act as stimulants. They include caffeine and theobromine, which are also found in tea, coffee and chocolate.
- Caffeoyl derivatives: These compounds are the main health-promoting antioxidants in the tea.
- Saponins: These bitter compounds have certain anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-lowering properties.
- Polyphenols: This is a large group of antioxidants, linked to a reduced risk of many diseases.
However, the tea contains very small amounts of these nutrients, so mate alone is unlikely to make a large contribution to your diet.
Bottom Line: Yerba mate is an antioxidant powerhouse that contains many beneficial plant nutrients.
2. Can Boost Energy and Improve Mental Focus
Therefore, just like any other caffeinated food or beverage, it has the ability to increase your energy levels and make you feel less tired.
Several human studies observed improved alertness, short-term recall and reaction time in participants who consumed between 37.5 and 450 mg of caffeine (7).
Additionally, those who regularly consume yerba mate tea often rave that it enhances alertness like coffee, but without the jittery side effects.
However, these testimonials have not yet been scientifically proven.
Bottom Line: Thanks to its caffeine content, yerba mate can help increase your energy levels and boost your mental focus.
3. May Enhance Physical Performance
Since yerba mate contains a moderate amount of caffeine, those drinking it can expect similar physical performance benefits.
In fact, a recent study tested the effects on healthy men and women. Those given one 1-gram capsule of yerba mate right before exercise burned 24 percent more fat during moderate-intensity exercise (12).
A higher reliance on fat for fuel during exercise spares your carb reserves for critical high-intensity moments, such as cycling up a hill or sprinting towards the finish line. This could translate into better sports performance.
There is currently no recommended amount of yerba mate to drink before exercise.
Bottom Line: Yerba mate increases the reliance on fat for fuel during exercise. It may also improve muscle contractions and reduce fatigue, all of which may contribute to better physical performance.
4. May Protect Against Infections
Yerba mate may help prevent infections from bacteria, parasites and fungi.
Compounds in yerba mate may also prevent the growth of Malassezia furfur, a fungus responsible for scaly skin, dandruff and certain skin rashes (15).
Finally, research suggests that compounds in it may provide some protection against intestinal parasites (1).
Bottom Line: Yerba mate may have some anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic and anti-fungal properties. However, more research is needed.
5. May Help You Lose Weight and Belly Fat
It seems to decrease the total number of fat cells and reduce the amount of fat they hold (19).
Furthermore, a recent 12-week study in overweight people found that those given 3 grams of yerba mate per day lost an average of 1.5 lbs (0.7 kg). They also reduced their waist-to-hip ratio by 2 percent, which indicates that they lost belly fat (21).
In comparison, the participants given a placebo gained an average of 6.2 lbs (2.8 kg) and increased their waist-to-hip ratio by 1 percent over the same 12-week period (21).
Bottom Line: Yerba mate may reduce appetite, boost metabolism and increase the amount of fat burned for fuel. This could help you lose weight.
6. May Boost Your Immune System
However, researchers have not yet investigated the direct effects of yerba mate on the human immune system.
Bottom Line: Yerba mate has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may boost the immune system.
7. Lowers Blood Sugar Levels
Yerba mate may help lower blood sugar and reduce the complications often seen in diabetes.
However, research on humans is currently lacking.
Bottom Line: Yerba mate may improve insulin signaling and blood sugar control. However, more research is needed in humans.
8. May Lower the Risk of Heart Disease
Yerba mate contains antioxidant compounds, such as caffeoyl derivatives and polyphenols, which may protect against heart disease.
In humans, yerba mate seems to reduce cholesterol levels.
In one 40-day study, participants who drank 11 oz (330 ml) of yerba mate each day lowered their LDL cholesterol levels by 8.6–13.1 percent (30).
That being said, more studies are needed before strong conclusions can be reached.
Bottom Line: Yerba mate's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-lowering properties may help protect against heart disease.
How to Prepare Yerba Mate
Yerba mate is traditionally served in a container called a gourd, also known as a calabash.
It's commonly sipped through a metal straw that has a filter on its lower end to strain out the leaf fragments.
To prepare mate, fill the bottom third of the calabash with fire-burned or toasted mate leaves prior to adding hot water.
If you do not own a calabash, you can prepare mate tea in a French press.
Although it's traditionally consumed hot, some people prefer to serve yerba mate cold, especially in hot climates.
Bottom Line: Yerba mate can be consumed hot or cold and is prepared similarly to other loose teas. It's traditionally served in a gourd or calabash.
Safety and Side Effects
Yerba mate is unlikely to cause harm to healthy adults who drink it occasionally.
However, those who drink it regularly may be at increased risk of the following:
Caffeine-Related Side Effects
Therefore, individuals taking MAOI drugs should use yerba mate with caution.
Finally, due to its caffeine content, it may also interact with the muscle relaxant Zanaflex or the antidepressant Luvox. Individuals taking these drugs should avoid yerba mate, as it can increase the effects of the drugs (40).
Bottom Line: Frequent consumption of very hot yerba mate may increase the risk of certain cancers. Pregnant women and individuals sensitive to caffeine or taking certain prescribed medications should drink it with caution.
Yerba mate may not be suitable for everyone and drinking it regularly at very hot temperatures may increase the risk of certain cancers.
However, this beverage also contains various beneficial compounds linked to impressive health benefits.
If you'd like to give yerba mate a try, start slowly and make sure to let it cool a little before drinking it.

Tea anyone? I'm a self confessed "queen of tea"–preferably green and, if I can get it, especially green chai. All the healthy properties of green tea spiced with the flavors and traditions of India, one of the world's greatest tea inspirations and an important tea producer.
The report reveals the systematic presence of mixtures of multiple pesticides, many classified as highly or moderately hazardous by the World Health Organisation (WHO), in tea grown and sold in India as well as exported abroad  by leading international and national brands such as Tetley, Lipton and Twinings. These brands belong to companies like Tata Global Beverages, Hindustan Unilever and Twinings, among others.
Practically all the samples taken from packaged tea purchased on the Indian market over the last year contained residues of at least one pesticide, and more than half of them contained "cocktails" of more than 10 different pesticides, including one sample, which contained residues of 20 different pesticides!
Overall a total of 34 different pesticides were found including the highly hazardous monocrotophos (the pesticide linked to the Bihar mid-day meal tragedy when 23 school children died from acute poisoning due to misuse of pesticide containers) and neoniconitoid insecticides such as imidacloprid (associated with reproductive or developmental impacts in animals, as well as affecting bees and other beneficial insects).
It appears that 23 of these 34 pesticides are not even registered for use in the cultivation of tea in India. The research also uncovered the frequent presence of DDT, despite the fact that it is no longer registered for use in agriculture in India and was banned in such applications as long ago as 1989. Although it is still in use for control of disease carrying insects and may be present as a contaminant of other pesticides.
However, close to 60 percent of the samples also contained residues of at least one pesticide above the Maximum Residue Levels set by the EU (EU-MRLs), with almost 40 percent of the tea samples exceeding these levels by more than 50 percent.
That's a little worrying seeing as India is responsible for supplying just over 11 percent of world tea exports; with top export markets for Indian tea including Russia, U.S., UK and Germany.
As the report points out, it's really not clear why these big brands are still supporting tea farming that is stuck on the old outdated pesticide treadmill when—especially in places like India—alternative ecological pest control practices are already being used very successfully, saving farmers money and getting away from dependence on costly and environmentally destructive chemicals.
Ecological pest control and farming can grow tea without relying on toxic chemicals that contribute to our intake of pesticides and potentially expose us and tea workers to completely unnecessary health risks.
Ecological farming makes full use of natural functions and the diversity of nature. It not only makes environmental sense but can make sure tea farms—and farmers—are here to stay in changing markets and climates.
It's really about time the big brands got their act together and moved the tea sector into ecological tea farming. They should push their own supply chains and the large tea estates to urgently phase out pesticides and shift to ecological tea cultivation.
Tea companies should also help to ensure government bodies in India develop support systems and funds for small tea growers (already responsible for 26 percent of Indian tea cultivation) to move away from pesticides.
Unilever already agreed to some of Greenpeace India's demands. Will other tea companies follow their example and clean our chai (tea) too?
