Coyote Peterson and the Brave Wilderness team take kayaks to an island off the coast of Maine, where an abandoned fortress from 1858 now displays a sign reading, "ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK."

"There's always a chance that something interesting can be found," Peterson testifies as they approach Fort Gorges. Upon entering the huge castle, he exclaims, "It feels like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!"

The Hellbender is a giant salamander, up to 29 inches long, but these creatures aren't easy to find.

They tend to spend daylight hours under rocks, and on top of that, their numbers—and their habitats—have severely dwindled.

In the above video from Brave Wilderness, Coyote Peterson and herpetologist Tim Brust travel to a secret location on a quest to encounter the super amphibian. Their mission is to collect field data and biometrics to help conservation efforts for the Hellbender, listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
