We’re a country of pet lovers. Ninety and a half million families – or 70% of American households – own a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association. One hundred and thirty-five million cats and dogs live in our homes, and many more amphibians, fish, birds, rodents, and reptiles bring joy to our lives.

A lot happened last year. Record temperatures rolled through the Pacific Northwest. Hawaii was hit by a blizzard. Search for ‘Asian Unicorn’ Intensifies in Attempt to Save Elusive Species

One of the rarest animals in the world, the saola is so elusive that no biologist has ever observed one in the wild. The critically endangered species was photographed via a camera trap in Vietnam in 2013, which was the first time the ‘Asian unicorn’ had been seen there in the wild for 15 years, the Daily Mail reported. The saola wasn’t even discovered as a species until 1992, the first to be added to the scientific roster of large mammals in more than 50 years, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

Vacuuming Animal DNA From Air Could Help Protect Endangered Species

To protect endangered species, scientists and conservationists need to know where these species exist. Consuming Human Junk Food Linked to Microbial Diversity Loss in Wild Bears

Wild bears grabbing salmon with their large paws as the fish slip back into the water — and occasionally catching one — is one of the most compelling scenes in nature. When it’s not the time of year for a salmon run, the bears’ diet consists of whatever they can find, including berries, roots, insects, grass and other plants. Unfortunately, wild bears can also develop a taste for human foods, including junk food. A recent study found that eating these foods can have an adverse effect on the microbiome of wild bears.

Addressing the Double Standards of Animal Cruelty

I woke up this morning to see two news articles, both involving animals but very different in tone. One article highlighted how a man was convicted of animal cruelty in Australia for shooting an arrow through a cat’s head. The other hailed the capture of a nearly 1,000-pound mako shark off the coast of New Jersey as an “incredible feat” and called the fishermen “winners.”

Beavers Are Migrating North, Altering the Arctic Environment

As the Arctic continues to warm, creatures who hadn’t previously inhabited the far northern landscape are taking up residence, including those who build their own homes: beavers. And they’re not only part of the migration of animals taking advantage of the warmer climate — their actions are exacerbating the climate crisis.
