What Determines the Cost of Solar Panels in Wyoming?

There’s no sugarcoating it — the cost of switching to solar renewable energy is expensive. While you’ll likely see savings in the long run with lower electric bills and a return on your investment, we know it’s a big upfront cost that not everyone can afford

However, there are some factors (other than system size) that determine the cost of solar panels in Wyoming. By customizing some of these factors, you may be able to save on your solar energy system.

Solar Equipment

As noted in the chart above, the size of your solar panel system will play the biggest role in determining how much your solar panel installation costs. While the average Wyoming resident will install a 9-kW solar system, that may not be the right size for your home. You can get a rough idea of how many solar panels you’ll need based on your past utility bills, available roof space and the amount of sunlight your home gets.

It’s not just the size, but the brand and type of solar photovoltaic panel you install that will alter the price tag. For example, you want the highest energy efficiency, you may spend a bit more on solar panels from a top-name brand, like SunPower. If saving money is more important to you, you may be able to save by installing cheaper solar panels.

And don’t forget about other equipment you’ll need — or want — to add on to your system, like inverters, mounting systems or batteries for energy storage. Most companies will offer a variety of brands for solar batteries — like the Tesla Powerwall or Generac PWRcell — that come with different price tags.

Solar Financing

Like with most big purchases, you’re presented with different financing options for solar that will alter the total cost of your solar electric system. Obviously, if you take on a solar loan with a high-interest rate, you’ll end up paying more for your solar panel installation over time. On the other hand, if you pay more, or all, of the cost of solar panel installation upfront, you’ll owe less.

We know it’s a lot of money, but it’s best to pay for as much as you can upfront to maximize your solar savings. Some companies may advertise “free solar panels,” but what they’re really offering are solar leases or power purchase agreements (PPAs). We don’t recommend leasing your solar panels because you won’t be able to capitalize on all of the benefits of going solar if you don’t own your panels.

Solar Installation Company

Different solar installation companies will offer different equipment brands and services that can alter the cost of your overall solar project in Wyoming. Prices can vary if it’s a solar interconnection project or if it’s off-grid. We recommend shopping around and comparing different quotes from different Wyoming solar companies before deciding on a solar installer.

Wyoming Solar Incentives

Wyoming is not one of the top states for solar, and that could be because there aren’t many state-manded solar incentives or solar tax exemptions there. However, many Wyoming residents are still reaping other benefits of solar energy sources, like lower electricity rates and  independence from utility companies.

Whatever your reason for making the switch to clean energy alternatives, we still want you to get the maximum reward. Here are some solar financial incentives you can capitalize on in Wyoming:

Wyoming Solar Incentive How it Affects the Cost of Solar Panels in Wyoming
Wyoming PACE Financing Program Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing allows property owners to cover the upfront costs of energy improvements. While it may not reduce the price of your solar system, it will provide you more time to pay them off so you can use some of the savings from your electricity.
Net Metering Wyoming established a statewide net metering program in 2001. As the law stands, an investor-owned utility, electric cooperative or irrigation district has to compensate solar users for the net excess generation (NEG) they provide to the grid. The NEG is treated as a kilowatt-hour credit or compensation on the solar user’s net bill. At the beginning of the calendar year, the energy provider will purchase any unused credits at the utility’s “avoided cost” (basically “wholesale”) rate.
Local Solar Rebates & Incentives Some Wyoming utility companies will offer incentives for energy efficiency upgrades, like Rocky Mountain Power’s “Wattsmart Residential Efficiency Program.” However, as of early 2022, none of them seem to offer any incentives specifically for solar. We encourage you to ask your solar installation company if there are any solar manufacturer rebates available for you.
Federal Solar Tax Credit The Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is a tax incentive that allows solar adopters to claim 26% of their total solar equipment and installation costs as a tax credit on their next federal filing. The 26% credit is in effect for any solar project purchased in 2022, however, the tax credit is set to decrease to 22% in 2023 and disappear completely in 2024 if it’s not extended by the federal government.
