Solar incentives are meant to help mitigate the cost of installing a solar panel system on your home. These financial incentives are in place to encourage more Americans to switch their home over to renewable energy. Incentives can include things like discounts, cash back or credit towards your monthly utility bill. Some incentives are offered federally, while others are provided by the Colorado government or your utility company, county or municipality. Some solar incentives you might qualify for are:

  • Tax Exemptions: Your solar panels could qualify for exemptions on both sales and property tax. Sales tax exemptions are applied at the time of purchase. Property tax exemptions allow you to exclude the value added by your solar panels when you are calculating property taxes on your home.
  • Tax Credits: These credits are dollar-for-dollar reductions (not deductions) in how much in taxes you owe the government.
  • Net Metering: Make sure you talk with your Stonegate utility company about signing a net metering contract. This allows you to get a credit towards your monthly utility bill for the value of excess energy generated by your solar panels. You may receive either a dollar-for-dollar credit or a percentage of the value.
  • Rebates: Solar rebates may be provided by your local utility company, or by your county or state. These rebates are essentially cash back that is applied after you purchase a solar system and before tax credits are calculated.

Federal Solar Incentives

Federal incentives are the type of incentives that you are most likely to have heard of. It's likely that you've heard of the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit, or ITC. This is a tax credit equal to a predetermined percentage of the money you spend on solar panels for your home.

The ITC initially applied to 30% of the cost of solar panel installation, although that number has fluctuated slightly over the years between 26-30%. The installation date of your solar system will determine what percentage you qualify for. The total installation cost includes the panels themselves as well as the cost of equipment, labor and accessories. There is no maximum claim amount. The ITC can be applied to solar panels installed after January 1, 2006, on your primary or secondary residence. The residence must be owned by you and in the United States.

Your local Stonegate solar panel installer can provide you with more information about the ITC and how it may apply to your situation.

The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in August 2022, expanded and extended the ITC (as well as renaming it to the Clean Energy Credit). The Clean Energy Credit re-raises the credit up to 30% for solar systems installed between 2022 and 2032. After 2032, the credit percentage will see a slight decrease annually until the end of the program in 2035. Starting in 2023, the program expansion will also make credits for energy storage systems even easier to claim.

State & Local Solar Incentives

Some solar incentives may be provided by state and local governments. Like with federal incentives, these might include tax credits, rebates and more. These incentives may be provided by the Colorado government, or by your county or municipality. Some are ongoing, while others are available for a limited time.

Next Steps for Installing Solar in Stonegate

There are many kinds of solar incentives: those provided by local utility companies, those offered by the federal government and those offered by the Colorado government, to name a few. Solar energy use has increased tremendously in the last 15 years, partially due to these incentives. If you're ready to make the switch to solar energy, getting in touch with your local Stonegate solar panel installation expert is an excellent place to start.

EcoWatch's Stonegate, CO Solar Incentives FAQs

How do I learn if I qualify for solar incentives?

Generally, solar incentives apply to:

  1. a new solar panel system
  2. installed on a property that you own
  3. within the U.S.
  4. between the dates specified by a particular incentive.

Specific incentives, including those run by the Colorado government or by your county/municipality, could have additional qualifications. Speak with your local Stonegate solar installer to find out what incentives your project will qualify for.

If I already have a solar system installed on my house, can I still claim incentives?

If your solar system was installed after January 1, 2022, you may qualify for the recently increased 30% tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act. If your system was installed between 2006 and 2021, you might qualify for a tax credit between 26% and 30%, depending on the date of installation. Reaching out to the company that installed your system, or any local Stonegate solar installer, can help you learn more about what incentives you might want to apply for.

How much can I save annually on my electric bill if I add solar panels to my house in Stonegate?

When you add solar panels to your house in Stonegate, you can expect to save approximately $1,066.53 per year, or approximately $20,264.05 over the next 20 years.
